PEI is known for it's potatoes, red sand beaches, red sandstone cliffs, sand dunes, picturesque landscapes, lighthouses, golf courses, it's connection to the literary character Anne of Green Gables and for it's seafood, including lobster, mussels and oysters. The island is Canada's largest producer of potatoes with over 90 varieties grown. PEI has 63 lighthouses and 800 km (490 miles) of beaches over it's 1,100 km (680 mile) coastline. Charlottetown, the province's capital city, is known as the "Birthplace of Confederation". The 12.9 km (8 mile) long Confederation Bridge extends the Trans-Canada Highway from New Brunswick to PEI and is known as the world's longest bridge spanning ice-covered water and is Canada's longest bridge.  Construction of this engineering marvel started in 1993 and was completed in 1997.
